Tutorship
Tutelage at the University of Ljubljana has been defined as a systematic guidance of students throughout their study, focusing not only on their academic progress or challenges, but also on their personal development. Tutors foster academic achievement and build confidence so that students can become independent learners.
Teacher and fellow student tutoring is offered to all students if desired. Teacher tutors usually assist their students with advice on various issues such as the choice of optional courses, career options and other queries about academic progress. They help identify and strengthen the students’ study skills and assess their academic progress and development matched to their capabilities. The overall role of teacher tutors is to support the students to achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. They also provide a point of referral to appropriate support services if so required. Senior students provide informal yet effective assistance and guidance for their peers in all aspects of their exploration. Student tutors help promote the students’ academic excellence and personal success. They assist the students in mastering course content and developing academic skills. Together they address many of personal and study-related problems in order to prevent the loss of motivation and subsequent academic failure. Student tutoring is an important activity that benefits also the tutors who thus gain new knowledge and experience. Tutoring facilitates building the bonds of trust among the students, which enhances positive beliefs and attitudes towards learning and better academic performance.
